The Union Jack

The three flags of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are combined to form The Union Jack.

The British flag is a combination of the 3 flags of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and evolved as the 3 countries became united.


A square red cross on a white background is the flag of St George and the flag which represents England.  A diagonal white cross on a blue background is the flag of St Andrew and the flag of Scotland. A diagonal red cross on a white background is the flag of St Patrick and the flag of Northern Ireland.


Wales and England had been united for many years before the Union Jack was formed and explains why the Welsh Red Dragon missing.



Questions for British citizens


  1. Should it be mandatory for all public buildings to display the Union Jack?
  2. Should all children be taught the history of the the Union Jack?
  3. Should the flag be withdrawn to include the Red Dragon?
  4. If Scotland votes to leave the UK should the flag of St Andrew be withdrawn?
